Fuelling, refuelling, repair and recovery.

Step by step advice to help you get the most from your sport

Stage 1 - FUELLING

Carbohydrates = Instant Fuel

All activities use fuel, which is measured in calories and often referred to as energy. Unfortunately many of us leave the house on a half-full tank or even less. In order to run effectively, it is important to make sure that our fuel tanks are properly filled. Our immediate fuel tanks are our muscles. The quick burning fuels our bodies use are carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice, vegetables, fruit and sugar. When we eat carbohydrates they are converted in the body and stored as muscle glycogen-this filling up the fuel tank

DO: Drink a Formula 1 shake mixed with diluted fruit juice 30 minutes before exercise. This provides immediate fuel in the muscles (muscle glycogen)

NB.  If fat loss is also desired, then Pre-exercise (i.e.. The Fuel (before) phase), use only Thermojetics Instant Herbal Beverage  and NOT Formula 1 (this means that body fat will be broken down to provide the energy source).

in early 2004 beat my 10k run time on a hilly course by 45 second

Fat=Reserve Fuel

Fats in our food are stored in the long distance fuel tanks: our fat cells. We tap into these reserve fuel tanks when we participate in endurance events.

DO: Use Herbalife's full line of nutritional products including Formula 2 Vitamin –Mineral & Herbal tablets and Cell Activator  to ensure your giving your body optimal nutrition.

Optimal nutrition sets Herbalife products apart from all the other programmes. And this approach to nutrition is based on the time-honoured principle of balance.

By making use of three major technologies –good science, micronutrient supplementation and herbal science-many of Herbalife's products work synergistically with each other to help you increase the absorption of the nutrients in your food. In the process, this critical balance of nutrients and herbs helps to optimise your ability to digest food properly, further assuring that nutrition reaches the cellular level

Stage 2 - HYDRATING (DURING)

During training, competition and your workout, drink fluid at least every 5 minutes.

DO: Drink water with Herbal Aloe Drink.

Consume water with a very weak solution of Formula 1 .
Enjoy
Thermojetics Instant Herbal Beverage (contains caffeine) as often as desired.

Jeremy West
Double World Kayak Sprint Champion

My strength, endurance and speed have all made huge leaps forward, while my recovery times instantly went through the floor.

Stage 3 - REFUELLING

Keep in mind that our window of opportunity for maximum-potential glycogen replenishment occurs within the first 30 mins after exercise. This simply means that we have a 30 minute WINDOW when our fuel tanks-our muscles-are most receptive towards being refilled.

DO: Immediately after exercise drink a Formula 1 shake mixed up with fruit juice –start filling those fuel tanks! Continue refuelling  after exercise with carbohydrate foods.

Stage 4 - REPAIRING

Protein =Repair

After exercise, we should also take in high quality protein. Every activity in life damages muscle cells; the more strenuous the activity or the exercise, the more damage that occurs. Adequate, high quality protein assists muscle cells in repairing themselves.

DO: About one and a half to two hours after exercise end, drink another Formula 1 mixed with a protein-rich beverage or food (milk or yoghurt). Add a scoop of Protein Supplement powder  for extra protein benefits.

Stage 5 - RECOVERY

Research suggest that antioxidants nutrients assist in reducing recovery time by helping the body combat free –radical damage. Athletes create large amounts of free radicals in several ways. One way is by simply breathing in far more oxygen than a non-active person does.
By minimising free–radical production, the athlete can potentially reduce the amount of recovery time needed between events. Reducing free –radical damage may:
1. speed up lactic acid removal mechanisms
2. reduce muscle-fibril degradation
3. increase glycogen resynthesis

The bottom line is that an athlete may feel less soreness, stiffness and fatigue. This may lead to more time for practice and playing the sport. A variety of antioxidants enhance the body’s recovery and regenerate each other to sustain the body’s antioxidant power

DO: Take Herbalife's antioxidant products – Schizandra Plus and Rose Ox The body has to perform optimally when in a state of good nutritional health. As active people, we must take a proactive approach toward our nutritional health. As active people, we must take a proactive approach toward our nutritional intake so that we have high quality fuel available and the energy necessary to sustain our desired levels of activity, exercise and competition.
